[2008/04/25 12:04] IM: Dirk Talamasca: Turning over governance to region owners is a step in that direction, Perp and Time. There is no reason such an environment could not exist. It requires extra attention to detail which the region owner could promise and be obligated to provide.
[2008/04/25 12:04] IM: Nany Kayo: lol

[2008/04/25 12:18] IM: Valiant Westland: Don't litigate against thieves... shoot them!
[2008/04/25 12:20] IM: Julynn Lilliehook: herman who?
[2008/04/25 12:20] IM: Media Hax: wow... great idea by furniture maker
[2008/04/25 12:20] IM: Valiant Westland: Herman Miller... makers of the Eron chair
[2008/04/25 12:20] IM: Valiant Westland: Based in Holland Michigan
[2008/04/25 12:20] IM: Valiant Westland: Disclaimer... RW client of mine.
[2008/04/25 12:21] IM: Julynn Lilliehook: oh....i can't afford fancy stuff in RL
[2008/04/25 12:22] IM: Nany Kayo: cant fly in RL either
[2008/04/25 12:22] IM: Julynn Lilliehook starts flying every night at 5pm in RL
[2008/04/25 12:23] IM: Bjorlyn Loon: hi ALmo
[2008/04/25 12:24] IM: LifeFactory Writer: Do people actually work for $.37 an hour here?
[2008/04/25 12:24] IM: Beyers Sellers: yes!
[2008/04/25 12:24] IM: Valiant Westland: Good contracts are going to require RW legal protections!
[2008/04/25 12:24] IM: LifeFactory Writer: 100 L = 37 cents, right????
[2008/04/25 12:25] IM: LifeFactory Writer: Why do they do that, Beyers?
[2008/04/25 12:25] IM: Valiant Westland: And Non-disclosure agreements and...
[2008/04/25 12:25] IM: LifeFactory Writer: I suppose I should ask them.
[2008/04/25 12:25] IM: Ellie Brewster: Define work.
[2008/04/25 12:25] IM: Valiant Westland: These are the "Best Practices" mentioned earlier...
[2008/04/25 12:25] IM: LifeFactory Writer: Bulding and scripting as skills are surely worth more than 37 cents, don't you think?
[2008/04/25 12:26] IM: Media Hax: I run a small sweetshop in SL...
[2008/04/25 12:26] IM: LifeFactory Writer: :) HI Media.
[2008/04/25 12:26] IM: Media Hax: *sweat
[2008/04/25 12:26] IM: Kwil Lowey: If you can organize the builders to agree with that, then yes... otherwise, it's worth what people charge.
[2008/04/25 12:26] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: if you had said Sweatshop I'd be more impressed
[2008/04/25 12:26] IM: LifeFactory Writer: I prefered "sweet"shop :D
[2008/04/25 12:26] IM: Julynn Lilliehook agrees with VAliant
[2008/04/25 12:26] IM: Media Hax: ;-)
[2008/04/25 12:26] IM: LifeFactory Writer: I thought people were charging $20.00-$50.00 an hour, which seems reasonable.
[2008/04/25 12:26] IM: Julynn Lilliehook has made those in SL non-disclosure agreements
[2008/04/25 12:27] IM: Julynn Lilliehook: but I don't think AMerican min wage laws apply
[2008/04/25 12:27] IM: LifeFactory Writer: I think this is what graphic designers and scripters in the first world charge, basically.
[2008/04/25 12:28] IM: Valiant Westland: So... create the RW base of operations for your virtual business in the Caman Islands, etc!
[2008/04/25 12:28] IM: Nany Kayo: I pay more than $50 for lots of stuff in SL
[2008/04/25 12:28] IM: LifeFactory Writer: If the skills are up to par, that seems completely reasonable to me.
[2008/04/25 12:28] IM: Valiant Westland: Or in the case of the US... in Nevada, which is a tax-free, business-friendly state!
[2008/04/25 12:29] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: One factor I've seen that has made the economy in project entropia more viable than SL's, is that the PED (project entropia dollar) is pinned against the US dollar at a rate of 5 PED per US dollar. The value of the linden is so low that it makes BIG numbers with small values. $50,000L looks like a lot of money to anyone who has to pay a bill but $PED250 is a much easier number to swallow. I've actually seen people be driven off by prices of the SAME THING in Second Life that they wanted in entropia, and felt better about paying for it in entropia because the price quoted "felt" smaller.
[2008/04/25 12:29] IM: Venus Jervil: Are there countries in the world where they have enough relative wealth to afford a computer and power to run it, yet their different economic situation means that the exchange rate makes Lindens viable to be paid in at these sorts of minimum wage rates?
[2008/04/25 12:29] IM: Kwil Lowey: Valiant: Head office doesn't matter as much as location of employee. Are you going to require all employees to be in Nevada/Cayman islands?
[2008/04/25 12:30] IM: LifeFactory Writer: @Hydra-- I paid for one small thing in SL; I offered the price in US to avoid any confusion or manipulation.
[2008/04/25 12:30] IM: Valiant Westland: Good point Kwil... although there is precedent for minimizing liabillities via virtual workforces tied to a favorable HQ hub
[2008/04/25 12:31] IM: Tex Rhode: What if the work is done in the Nevada sim, or the Cayman Island sim ?
[2008/04/25 12:31] IM: Tex Rhode: (sorry, I just couldn't resist)
[2008/04/25 12:31] IM: LifeFactory Writer: has little taste for exploitation.
[2008/04/25 12:32] IM: Nicole Tarber would love an office in the Caymans!
[2008/04/25 12:32] IM: Sered Woollahra: tex, this issue seems even more pressing in opensim environments I think
[2008/04/25 12:32] IM: Media Hax: What if the sim were to reside in one of those countries.. another good arguement for opening the grid
[2008/04/25 12:32] IM: Sered Woollahra: opemsims can be anywhere..
[2008/04/25 12:33] IM: Darleen Nikolaidis: sorry for joining so late the conversation. How do you define "open" sim?
[2008/04/25 12:33] IM: Sered Woollahra: i've written once on distributed grids, think thatś's even more difficyult legally.
[2008/04/25 12:33] IM: Tex Rhode: (--hmmm, just to be clear, I ws making a joke, the joke being "confusion" between the real world and the virtual worlds.
[2008/04/25 12:33] IM: Sered Woollahra: opensim is open source SL simulator. You can host your own.
[2008/04/25 12:33] IM: Buffy Beale: Charge a global tax, put it in a fund to do a global good such as ending world hunger
[2008/04/25 12:33] IM: Media Hax: Darleen, "Opensim" is the open source project for Virtual worlds
[2008/04/25 12:33] IM: Sered Woollahra: Lol buffy
[2008/04/25 12:33] IM: Darleen Nikolaidis: ty
[2008/04/25 12:34] IM: LifeFactory Writer: Which back chat is he responding to, please?
[2008/04/25 12:35] IM: Valiant Westland: Cayman Islands!
[2008/04/25 12:35] IM: LifeFactory Writer: ah,...nevermind....this one, it seems.
[2008/04/25 12:35] IM: Valiant Westland: Hmmm
[2008/04/25 12:35] IM: Fleep Tuque: might be IMs to him directly
[2008/04/25 12:35] IM: LifeFactory Writer: ok, Fleep. thanks.
[2008/04/25 12:35] IM: Darleen Nikolaidis: regarding the legal part, at least countries charge any affiliate of multinationals. Typically those deduct tax paid elsewhere from the tax paid at their home location. So if you have a distributed workforce, HQ in the Caymans wouldn't guarantee you anything
[2008/04/25 12:36] IM: Julynn Lilliehook: anyone interested in joining SL LAw School...IM me
[2008/04/25 12:37] IM: Darleen Nikolaidis: I would... smiles
[2008/04/25 12:37] IM: Julynn Lilliehook: This is some of the stuff we will talk about
[2008/04/25 12:37] IM: Valiant Westland: Using "Independent Contractors" and having all revenue inbound at the HQ level is the key
[2008/04/25 12:38] IM: Darleen Nikolaidis: hmmm, In Europe they would tell you that there is a labour relationship and they would consider them to all effects as your employees. There's legislation in some countries around that already
[2008/04/25 12:39] IM: Valiant Westland: In the US labor laws are much less government intrusive...
[2008/04/25 12:39] IM: Darleen Nikolaidis: I know
[2008/04/25 12:39] IM: Media Hax: Can't want for a nationless world
[2008/04/25 12:40] IM: Julynn Lilliehook: oh?
[2008/04/25 12:40] IM: Valiant Westland: I think the Metaverse is a great catalyst for a "Right to Work" culture.
[2008/04/25 12:40] IM: Darleen Nikolaidis: I have been eight years in Europe and can attest that it's a big change
[2008/04/25 12:40] IM: LifeFactory Writer: So, if you assemble a multi-national team in VR, are you going to pay the participant in China $.37 cents and the US or Euro employee a more reasonable rate? Sounds to me that VRs are only going to facilitate "outsourcing" :D
[2008/04/25 12:41] IM: Valiant Westland: Not "Outsourcing" "Right

[2008/04/25 11:49] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: Because television doesnt have feedback and it's an effective means of controlling people. You can NOT control people through virtual reality. WE make the world, not them.

[2008/04/25 11:50] IM: Dirk Talamasca: Make Larry stay! If you don't, he is just going to watch TV and be passive!
[2008/04/25 11:51] IM: Stargazer Blazer: aliant Westland: re: " it doesn't matter who you are in rl, in this world, you are judged by what you do and say." How do you establish trust, creditworthiness, etc. here?
[2008/04/25 11:51] IM: Perplexity Peccable: my son was in Teen Grid - hated it
[2008/04/25 11:51] IM: Nicole Tarber: SL vs RL relationships...I'm not sure there is a great deal of difference...or there needn't be. Especially in business, treat people the way you would in RL, or even challenge yourself to treat them BETTER than in RL
[2008/04/25 11:51] IM: arabella Ella: organisatyions don't useSL with 60K users ... crazy
[2008/04/25 11:51] IM: Chimera Cosmos: lol Dirk

[2008/04/25 11:51] IM: Stargazer Blazer: You establish it, Valiant, by building relationships with people, and gaining a reputation as an ethical businessperson.
[2008/04/25 11:51] IM: Alaya Kumaki: why better here than in rl?
[2008/04/25 11:51] IM: Lyday Latte: http://press.princeton.edu/titles/8647.html

[2008/04/25 11:52] IM: Fleep Tuque: I think this is the Metanomics sow that Beyers was referring to http://slcn.tv/metanomics-mitch-wagner-steve-prentice
[2008/04/25 11:52] IM: Valiant Westland: We need to have "islands" of the platform, with each organization able to create their own and still have them linked, based on a common (open standard)
[2008/04/25 11:52] IM: Chimera Cosmos: cats have a very high level of intelligence JenzZa :-)
[2008/04/25 11:52] Fleep Tuque shouts: I think this is the Metanomics sow that Beyers was referring to http://slcn.tv/metanomics-mitch-wagner-steve-prentice

[2008/04/25 11:53] IM: Chimera Cosmos: they didn't do a good job with the SL-web-RL format at that conf
[2008/04/25 11:53] IYan Writer shouts: Last Metanomics show video, transcripts: http://metanomics.net/22-apr-2008/ll-situation-dire-transcripts-now-avai...
[2008/04/25 11:54] IM: Perplexity Peccable: the odl "if we build it they will come" idea, which totally does not work here
[2008/04/25 11:54] IM: Niamh Babii: Wonderful to get that link, I hadn't noticed it. Thanks
[2008/04/25 11:54] IM: Chimera Cosmos: they can do much better and should
[2008/04/25 11:54] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: That's a big problem I've had. I've been looking to be a community manager for a corporation here, but they tend to say one isn't nessecary. They build 3 sims, no one goes to them, then they decide it's a waste of time and leave. And someone like JenzZa can get 120 people to come to a patch of DIRT because she knows how to run a community.
[2008/04/25 11:54] IM: Valiant Westland: Amen Hydra!
[2008/04/25 11:54] Female ZHAO-II AO: Couldn't find animation sitting chair f05
[2008/04/25 11:54] IM: JenzZa Misfit: ...awww .. Hydra ! how sweet of you :) * checks in the mail *
[2008/04/25 11:54] IM: Media Hax: Larry nailed it about the corporate attempts to come into SL...
[2008/04/25 11:54] Niamh Babii: But SL builds on MUDS MOOS et al
[2008/04/25 11:54] IM: Valiant Westland: The "Field of Dreams" approach has NEVER worked!
[2008/04/25 11:54] Niamh Babii: Tiny Mud did stuff years ago
[2008/04/25 11:54] IM: JenzZa Misfit: <--- goes all shy
[2008/04/25 11:54] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: A nice looking sim is cool and all, but you need community to succeed here. SL is about people, not prims
[2008/04/25 11:54] Niamh Babii: ?
[2008/04/25 11:55] IM: Alanagh Recreant laughs..... except, Muse Isle aint no dirt ;)
[2008/04/25 11:55] IM: arabella Ella: those who fail use RL tactics in SL and do not do research to see how to use different strategies
[2008/04/25 11:55] IM: Alaya Kumaki: slis a comunity style
[2008/04/25 11:55] IM: Media Hax: Which is why I wonder about the new CEO
[2008/04/25 11:55] IM: Nicole Tarber: It was a nice movie though....guys in baseball pants...WOOOT
[2008/04/25 11:55] IM: Kwil Lowey: Isn't that rather telling though? SL isn't the attraction, it's the community manager, which could be done over standard chat/streaming technology.
[2008/04/25 11:55] IM: Perplexity Peccable: "we have to be aifr" - "we are askign SL to be things it was never intended to be"
[2008/04/25 11:55] IM: Valiant Westland: "those who fail use RL tactics in SL and do not do research to see how to use different strategies" The opposit is true too!
[2008/04/25 11:55] IM: JenzZa Misfit: ...and that is why Virtual Africa will ROCK ! Alanagh .. AMAZING piece of dirt with an ever so amazing person taking care of it ... YOU
[2008/04/25 11:55] IM: Perplexity Peccable: "be fair"
[2008/04/25 11:55] IM: Chimera Cosmos: no Kwil--the avatar embodiment thing is crucial
[2008/04/25 11:55] IM: Alanagh Recreant: spam spam
[2008/04/25 11:55] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: its the community, not the community manager. the manager just brings it all together
[2008/04/25 11:56] IM: Fleep Tuque: Well, no, it's not just JenzZa's lovely personality, it's also what she brings to that community when they respond
[2008/04/25 11:56] IM: Valiant Westland: Those who think they can ignore proven RW "Best Practices" for business, just because they are in SL are also doomed to failure!
[2008/04/25 11:56] Niamh Babii: applause
[2008/04/25 11:56] IM: Timecat Hotaling: well nice talking to you all

[2008/04/25 11:58] IM: JenzZa Misfit: ....and of COURSE Larry could come
[2008/04/25 11:58] IM: Beyers Sellers: [11:38] Hydra Shaftoe: There was a news spot on CNN this morning about college students not being able to attend classes due to high gas prices. One woman just casually mentioned she's going to some classes in second life, but the focus of he news piece was on gas prices. I see *THAT* as real progress, and SL being accepted mainstream as just part of the web. THAT is real progress for us.
[2008/04/25 11:58] IM: JenzZa Misfit: yes do Beyers ...Hydra is on point

Chat Transcript for 111207 Part 2
[12:05] Alanagh Recreant smiles at Tara5.... thus, we pay for a 'service' when we give LL money, right?
[12:05] Gigs Taggart: Ithaca dollars are a local currency backed by labor :)
[12:05] Malburns Writer: Zee Linden has said Linden will have variable international exchange rates soon - but how like this is anyone;'s guess
[12:05] Goldie2u Vanvleck: its about time someone said what it really is instead of hiding behind hte "its a game" copout!
[12:05] Jujudoll Dancer: Iyan that is true to an extent, as we are no longer back by gold, but the Dollar has been astablished as being unbacked and no one is disputing that fact
[12:05] Nite Zelmanov: Malburns, really?
[12:05] Nite Zelmanov: Gigs: About the only rational thing to back money with, I think
[12:05] JenzZa Misfit: BAG OPEN ::::CATS EVERYWHERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FILM @ 11 !!!!!
[12:05] Malburns Writer: yes - gave talk inworld about 10 days ago
[12:06] Bevan Whitfield: yep - Zee said that, it will be VERY interesting to follow
[12:06] IYan Writer: jujudoll: sure.. fiat money always replaces less fiat money
[12:06] Julynn Lilliehook: IF this was the early 90s...we could have just used the peso...
[12:06] 57 Miles: Saying it's a game, and playing that card, makes you sound like **crooks**
[12:06] Travis Ristow: LMAO Jenza
[12:06] Alanagh Recreant: hehe
[12:06] Goldie2u Vanvleck: LOL jenZa!
[12:06] Bevan Whitfield: lol JenzZa!
[12:06] Dizzy Banjo: lol what a smackdown..
[12:06] IYan Writer: forgot what the law is called ;)
[12:06] Goedeke Messmer: The money becomes real once you draw it from L$s.... nobody is making their "real living" without conversion. Once L$s can be transferred for real objects (which there is some, but not much leakage) I think they can wear the figleaf successfully.
[12:06] JenzZa Misfit: lol
[12:06] 57 Miles: Somebody needed to make a strong statement!
[12:06] Dizzy Banjo: new grid arch!
[12:06] Julynn Lilliehook: Pesos were so sheap you could live for free on Mexico.
[12:06] JenzZa Misfit: LOL !!!!!! i love this planet !
[12:06] Travis Ristow: Way to go Int! Perfect!
[12:06] Dizzy Banjo: what do they think about that ?!!
[12:06] Monkey Canning: set intlibber on him
[12:06] Arun Saenz: How would one define the difference between RL, SL and "A Game"?
[12:06] JenzZa Misfit: omg
[12:07] Alanagh Recreant: ...try taking money OUT into another country that does not recognise the 'currency'
[12:07] Bevan Whitfield: ohhh nooo
[12:07] Alanagh Recreant: ;)
[12:07] Goldie2u Vanvleck: i agree 57--about time someone got off the "don't want to go against the crowd" and spoke out!
[12:07] Jujudoll Dancer: pesos are still cheap if you live in NYC
[12:07] Rose Springvale: excellent presentation... Int is my new hero!
[12:07] Monkey Canning: ESN is proud to be on the ACE exchange!
[12:07] Goedeke Messmer: Doh, Once = Until.
[12:07] Nite Zelmanov: Yeah! LL better figure this out
[12:07] Alanagh Recreant: very very nice, yes
[12:07] IYan Writer: juju: even cheaper if you live in canada ;)
[12:07] Bevan Whitfield: ohh juju
[12:07] Nite Zelmanov: by 57's definition LL looks like crooks too
[12:07] Julynn Lilliehook: That's why it's best to trade in sex....accepted everywhere
[12:07] 57 Miles: THe third one is theft
[12:07] Jujudoll Dancer: lmao Julynn
[12:07] Dizzy Banjo: surely we need to discuss the potential of the new grid architecture and how all of that could affect things like land value ? IP ? how that translates into the economy ?
[12:08] Travis Ristow: RIS is on ace!!!
[12:08] Bevan Whitfield: omg you guys
[12:08] Gigs Taggart: sex would be a good backing for currency
[12:08] Nite Zelmanov: Julynn: A currency backed by sex.... interesting idea
[12:08] Jujudoll Dancer: haha
[12:08] Tex Rhode: is anyone else hearing the echo now?
[12:08] JenzZa Misfit: THIS is interesting
[12:08] Bevan Whitfield hates the word game
[12:08] JenzZa Misfit: Beyers Sellers : Unplugged !
[12:08] Gigs Taggart: Dizzy sounds like a good future panel.
[12:08] Malburns Writer: Hah Julynn

[12:10] Arun Saenz: Websters Unabriged Dictionary shows 13 definitions for "game" then noun
[12:10] Dizzy Banjo thinks its grease.. its in between the cogs.. and necessary for lots of other things to function in the society
[12:10] Jujudoll Dancer: I have yet to make enough lindens to actually buy a toy, wallet, fish or a frog
[12:10] Judsonian Mornington: cant buy love...

[12:11] Bevan Whitfield: always the best show in town!!!!
[12:11] Jujudoll Dancer: wonderful show!
[12:11] Judsonian Mornington: great conversation
[12:11] Nite Zelmanov: Toyconomies
[12:12] Goedeke Messmer: Recently there was a survey that shows that sex is actually much more a niche aspect than I think most assumed (with over half claiming to have not particpated at all). I think the concept of "toy economy" is a useful construct.
[12:12] Julynn Lilliehook: We always end up like kids, don't we withthe sounds?
[12:12] Julynn Lilliehook: Hmmm...I'd like to know more about thet
[12:12] IntLibber Brautigan: Goe, problem is most of the internet economy is about sex
[12:12] Xantha Oe: i like 'early-stage' economy better
[12:14] Goedeke Messmer: I'm not convinced that we can declare L$ "real money" and simply claim that by doing so it magically becomes "real money". Casino chips are a toy economy that converts readily to real money, but the firewall at the step of "converting" the money back and forth remains in place.
[12:14] Malburns Writer: Plenty of toy shops in other metaverses
[12:14] IntLibber Brautigan: the market decides what is money and what isn't
[12:14] IntLibber Brautigan: thats the nature the market collapse of currencies
[12:14] Xantha Oe: Intlibber - are you thinking of encouraging a third-party audit function like in RL?
[12:14] Gigs Taggart: goedeke, casino chips are still treated as money
[12:14] Julynn Lilliehook: But a chip is marked with a dollar value...
[12:15] Jujudoll Dancer: if that's the case then sex is money
[12:15] Julynn Lilliehook: Ls are supposed to change
[12:15] Gigs Taggart: go buy some casino chips on your credit card and they'll treat it as a cash advance
[12:15] IntLibber Brautigan: actually we are implementing a profit/loss reporting system on our exchange in a few eeks
[12:15] Julynn Lilliehook: I better start charging then..Juju
[12:15] Goedeke Messmer: Yes... but the profits/loss are not realized until you cash out.
[12:15] Xantha Oe: the independent third-party audit instills more trust
[12:15] IntLibber Brautigan: yes
[12:15] Goedeke Messmer: That is a deliberate feature of the toy economy in a casino.
[12:15] Temporal Mitra: casino chips are not treated as real money...as they do not become taxable until they are convered back into real money
[12:16] Jujudoll Dancer: ok I would be interested in having a look at that analysis
[12:16] Arun Saenz: Geodeke.... that is how RL stock markets work too!
[12:16] Goedeke Messmer: L$ seem to so far work very much that way now.
[12:16] Jujudoll Dancer: so casino chips = wallet without interest?
[12:16] Arun Saenz: And also how RL banks work too
[12:16] Julynn Lilliehook: Don't start talking about taxes!
[12:16] Goedeke Messmer: No, you have to realize some transactions in stocks or banks.
[12:16] Monkey Canning: I am bringing out a new line of fish and frog wallets... 50l each.. if u want one im me
[12:17] Jujudoll Dancer: I can't talk about taxes, I ran out of coffee
[12:17] Julynn Lilliehook: Oh, but I think hookers accept casino chips...tax loophole ....pun intended
[12:17] Temporal Mitra: as a matter of fact, there is a shadow economy in both vegas and atlantic city, where many people trade goods and services for casino chips, instead of cash so that their purchases are non taxable
[12:17] Goldie2u Vanvleck: dang it where are the purses monkey? can we say discrimination LOL
[12:17] Arun Saenz: My view is that there is no real dividing line between RL, SL and game.... except from the perspective of the participant in any of those
[12:18] Julynn Lilliehook: If you give a hooker a $50 chip for a $40 bj, is the extra ten a tip?
[12:19] Jujudoll Dancer: and is that tip taxable ? or are hookers still not paying taxes?
[12:19] Julynn Lilliehook: Or do you get a $60 bj for only a $50 chip?
[12:19] Rose Springvale: Monkey, i love toys :)
[12:19] Rose Springvale: and is that tip reportable???
[12:19] Goedeke Messmer: I have been paid for work in SL in L$, but until I take that money out into US$, it remains "shadow". As a company owner, I simply transfer it out before the end of the tax year to ensure a clean separation as far as taxes go, but right now I can't "spend" my L$ on most real world goods. I think that is the break point: once I can spend them directly, the fig leaf of "toy economy" goes away.
[12:19] Malburns Writer: Nah - the tip's in ... never mind!
[12:19] Jujudoll Dancer: tips are always reportable
[12:20] Rose Springvale: hehe.
[12:20] Jujudoll Dancer: Goedeke does paypal deal in nickels? because I think I have about that much in my account
[12:20] Julynn Lilliehook: Why take the Ls out? Just by all those mod ffashion in SL!
[12:21] Goedeke Messmer: I earned more than I could spend on SL toys, so I cashed out for the general usability. :)
[12:22] Rose Springvale: one interesting thing
[12:22] Julynn Lilliehook: You need some slaves ans stuff then
[12:22] Rose Springvale: last i looked.. you still couldn't use L's to buy sims
[12:22] Malburns Writer: It would help if ,lindens could be spent inworld on tangible assets like land and fees - save on RL input
[12:23] Rose Springvale: which seems vry odd to me. YES mal, i agree
[12:23] Goedeke Messmer: Malburns: the reason you *can't* spend on land and fees is the preserve the fig leaf.
[12:24] Goedeke Messmer: That would be a *huge* hole in the L$ as a toy economy if you could spend on such a "real world" expense as server hosting or account fees.
[12:24] Gigs Taggart: being able to spend it on land fees would change nothing
[12:24] Gigs Taggart: ll would just sell that much more at market to feed the demand
[12:25] Malburns Writer: heck - even monopoly money can buy property (lol)
[12:25] Goedeke Messmer: The demand side isn't the point.
[12:25] Goedeke Messmer: The point is the legal stance on the use of L$ as a token instead of a currency.
[12:25] Gigs Taggart: you can't just ignore it
[12:25] Gigs Taggart: there is no legal stance
[12:25] Gigs Taggart: it's bs
[12:26] Goedeke Messmer: Does that mean WoW plat is "real" as well in your view?
[12:26] Malburns Writer: I think the future will see electronic currencies with rl exchange variants
[12:26] Gigs Taggart: does the company sell platinum and provide a market to trade it?
[12:27] Malburns Writer: metaverse currencies should think in that direction
[12:27] Goedeke Messmer: Not directly, but it is easily accomplished.
[12:27] Cinco Pizzicato: yes.
[12:27] Julynn Lilliehook takes her best legal stance.
[12:27] Goedeke Messmer: And Everquest actually does have such markets.
[12:27] Gigs Taggart: geodeke well that's all the difference
[12:27] Goedeke Messmer: Convertability? All virtual currencies are convertable at this time.
[12:27] Gigs Taggart: L$ buys real copyright licenses from copyright creators, it doesn't just "unlock" some "item" that was already on your hard disk
[12:28] Rose Springvale: i dunno, i can buy wow gold at a hundred places
[12:28] Goedeke Messmer: Some without official sanction, but I"m not sure how the stance of "official" conversion is valuable.
[12:29] Goedeke Messmer: That license is (in the view given by Ginsu) completely revocable at whim.
[12:29] Gigs Taggart: it isn't really
[12:29] Flix Saiman: the only MMO i have ever heard of that sanctions selling of intelectual property is SL
[12:29] Cinco Pizzicato: When prisoners buy things with cigarettes, they are using cigarettes as currency. Is prison a game?
[12:29] Goedeke Messmer: It isn't?
[12:29] Goedeke Messmer: I used to run MUDs, and I shut down down at whim; even after accepting donations for "in world" items.
[12:30] Flix Saiman: Everquest, SWG, WOW all state in their TOS that it is against the law to sell virutal goods from thier products and will ban you if they find out
[12:30] Goedeke Messmer: How isn't it revocable at whim (other than practially, due to the angry hordes and lost customers?)
[12:30] Flix Saiman: I was one of the first people selling virtual goods .. in Everquest i was making 100,000 plat a week and selling it.. I was one of the first Grandmaster Tailors on any server so i was in very high demand
[12:31] Malburns Writer: Creations belomng to creators, not the person that sells them the tools to create
[12:31] Flix Saiman: the way around it legally is in a MMO your not selling goods your selling the time it took to aquire said goods.. sure its a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo but to get around the TOS thats how you did it
[12:32] Flix Saiman: now in SL they have given us the oppertnity to sell our virtually created items and to set up our own copywrite systems with permissions (sure they dont work all the time) but its a huge step forward for MMO selling in virtual to real world money
[12:33] Goedeke Messmer: I'm not convinced that the legality or illegality of the conversion of virtual currency really matters much as far as the avoidance of becoming considered real currency. I'm not even convinced that they won't be considered "real" down the road, but at the moment the legal attitude appears to be that the conversion to a real world currency is the point at which gains are realized.
[12:33] Cinco Pizzicato: in other words: once it's taxable.
[12:34] Goedeke Messmer: The Lindens have a strong reason to avoid allowing them to be directly taxed.
[12:34] Flix Saiman: if your talking about legally ie.. to be taxed you are supposed to report any real income you recieve (as a professional gambler this is about the same thing)
[12:34] Goedeke Messmer: Reguation and overhead nightmare.
[12:34] Goedeke Messmer: Right, but professional gamblers get the tax form at the time of cashouts (although they are sometimes required to cash out when they win big by the casino).
[12:35] Flix Saiman: in other words.. if you do online trading, or say online gambling or even SL.. and you gain an income you are supposed to report that money to the IRS (or whatever legal entity its supposed to be from)
[12:35] Flix Saiman: ok no goed.. you only have to report if you try and cash out more than 10,000 USD a day.. lower than that and you can cash out all day long
[12:36] Goedeke Messmer: But even the "not tax form" cash outs are supposed to be entered as "income" and "expense".
[12:36] Flix Saiman: but thats the glitch.. if you exceed your daily limit of spending and get audtited (sp?) you have to prove how you aquired an brand new car and a few trips
[12:36] Cinco Pizzicato: but I think goedke is saying that if it can't be considered a gain, then it's not really currency. thus, a useful definition of currency might be: 'It's taxable."
[12:36] Flix Saiman: now if your worried about taxes in SL income
[12:37] Goedeke Messmer: Well, perhaps "it's taxable" is a bad definition of a currency, but people probably are more concerned about taxability than the "definition" of what hey have.
[12:37] Malburns Writer: Image someone like PayPal converted all funds held in accounts to a notional virtual currency - i9t would be converted back on withdrawl and taxed in RL. But could not a currency like that be linked to metaverse currencies too? (Not my expertise here)(
[12:37] Flix Saiman: you need to be able to show a loss if you do that and are breaking even (hypothetically) then you can end up paying no taxes
[12:37] Cinco Pizzicato: zactly, goedeke.
[12:38] Goedeke Messmer: (I.e., the man on the street could care less if the things they call "money" are "currency" or "tokens". But he cares a *lot* about if the tax man want's his pound of flesh).
[12:38] Flix Saiman: you cant tax somthing like that unless they institute some type of legal tax but on the internet the chances of somthing like that are very remote because nobody would pay.. because you would have everybody's fingers in the pie
[12:38] Goedeke Messmer: Anyway, as a business owner I find it useful to cash out before the end of the tax year. It makes a nice clean "record" of the state of my L$ account.
[12:39] Goedeke Messmer: The flux within the account during the year is "invisible" as far as taxes go by doing that, but I still pay my pound of flesh.
[12:39] Flix Saiman: basically i wouldnt worry about it in SL unless your making more than 10,000 USD a year.. if you are you might want to talk to a tax lawyer about ramifications of creating an LLC and showing a profit/loss per annual year to offset the taxes
[12:39] Goedeke Messmer: I have talked with a tax laywer, and what I'm doing was pretty much the suggestion to keep out of the grey area.
[12:40] Flix Saiman: exactly.. reporting it is always the best option.. as far as if your trying to be 100% legal
[12:40] Goedeke Messmer: Not really a suggestion for others, but I like my tax situation to remain very crisp. The amusement of flustered tax auditors is worth the minor delta in cash.
[12:41] Flix Saiman: as for me.. I make less than 10k a year in SL atm.. that might change next year.. but currently its not worth it to me to worry about funds
[12:42] Flix Saiman: now in everquest i was making around 3,000 USD a month.. mind you i was alot younger and never reported it.. but I did get audited and when the IRS agent asked me about it i told him i got it from video games.. he laughted and asked me how much i lied and told him about 6,000 total .. (truth was more like 25k) .. but ya it cancome back an bite you
[12:43] Goedeke Messmer: Right, but in all of these scenarios, there was a cashing out to a standard currency.
[12:43] Flix Saiman: its a strange new world as far as legal ramifications of taxes, laws, privicy .. and as the 3d meta verse expands it will be really intersting how laws are developed to do things
[12:43] Flix Saiman: yes .. but its hard to tell most times unless they sypena records of where all the money was coming in from.. ie.. lets say your getting it all into paypal.. how do they know its from that and not pay pal sales or whatnot..
[12:44] Goedeke Messmer: Personally, I think the governments will catch wind of the lost opprotunity and do everything in their power to remove the fig leaf of tokens vs currency and try to tax it; they already are aggressive about this in the trade of services and currency "exchanges".
[12:44] Flix Saiman: oh i guarntee it goedeke.. but it wont happen in stuff like SL..
[12:44] Monkey Canning: lol famous last words
[12:44] Flix Saiman: here is what is going to happen.. atm there is somthing in the US called the interent wired act which prevents you from gambling on the internt
[12:45] Goedeke Messmer: Yes, the cause of much wailing and gnashing of teeth in SL :)

[2008/04/28 11:45] IM: Dizzy Banjo: and back to congress...
[2008/04/28 11:45] IM: Dizzy Banjo: lol ?!
[2008/04/28 11:45] IM: Bjorlyn Loon offers Dizzy some berry juice to calm him down.
[2008/04/28 11:45] IM: BigMike Bukowski: Colbeagle!
[2008/04/28 11:45] IM: Exosius Woolley: Too bad Justice is no longer a surname - Eagleactica Justice would be perfect
[2008/04/28 11:45] IM: CeAire Decosta: If you don't laugh - you cry. I'd rather laugh.
[2008/04/28 11:45] IM: Rose Springvale: here's a serious question for you Beyers
[2008/04/28 11:45] IM: JenzZa Misfit: lol ... I AM DYIN HERE !!
[2008/04/28 11:45] IM: Bjorlyn Loon: LOL BigMike
[2008/04/28 11:45] IM: Rose Springvale: [11:44] ManqoQhapaqInca Qunhua: Congratulations for such a good work you are doing in SL, my question is : How can we make Second Life a safer place for non-profits in order to avoid fake charities or scams, but at the same time giving freedom and support for people interested in doing charity work or creating new charities based only in SL that could after certain time migrate to RL?
[2008/04/28 11:46] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: TWEET TWEET
[2008/04/28 11:46] IM: Bevan Whitfield face hurts.....
[2008/04/28 11:46] IM: Farnham Farrjones: OMG who can read that ???
[2008/04/28 11:46] IM: Harper Beresford: Beyers, are you getting these questions?
[2008/04/28 11:46] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: *pecks Jenzza*
[2008/04/28 11:46] IM: Ronnie Rhode: Good question
[2008/04/28 11:46] IM: Dirk Talamasca: zounds
[2008/04/28 11:46] IM: LifeFactory Writer: bjorlyn offers Dizzy Beary juice. :)
[2008/04/28 11:46] IM: Exosius Woolley: jinkies!
[2008/04/28 11:46] Bjorlyn Loon: and Im loving BigMike's suggestion of Colbeagle... too
[2008/04/28 11:46] IM: Dancer Morris: we might need official LL support to avoid scams -- some way of having an officially verified charity
[2008/04/28 11:47] IM: CeAire Decosta: That is valid Rose. It will have to take good planning and backup to make things fly right.
[2008/04/28 11:47] IM: Dizzy Banjo: lol
[2008/04/28 11:47] IM: Alanagh Recreant: crashed... damn, did I miss anything?
[2008/04/28 11:47] IM: Movies1963 Beck: no
[2008/04/28 11:47] IM: Farnham Farrjones: HAHAHAHAHA
[2008/04/28 11:47] IM: Harper Beresford: a lot of bear talk, Alanagh
[2008/04/28 11:47] IM: LifeFactory Writer: Can't help but beat the metaphorical dead bear!
[2008/04/28 11:47] IM: Bevan Whitfield: egads
[2008/04/28 11:47] IM: Dancer Morris: one way would be with a special last name; maybe a price break on doing that for nonprofits
[2008/04/28 11:47] IM: Dirk Talamasca: Have bears, will travel!
[2008/04/28 11:47] IM: Harper Beresford: Dancer, tehy do have prce breaks for nonprofits, no?
[2008/04/28 11:47] IM: Ronnie Rhode: ensuring 501 3c status in US is one way
[2008/04/28 11:47] IM: LifeFactory Writer: bear with us
[2008/04/28 11:47] IM: Harper Beresford: for sims, etc
[2008/04/28 11:47] IM: Ronnie Rhode: of verifying
[2008/04/28 11:47] IM: Tara Yeats: Question: how are nonprofits justifying their SL presence that connects directly with their nonprofit missions?
[2008/04/28 11:48] IM: Farnham Farrjones: LL - nonprofits - isn't that against the law?
[2008/04/28 11:48] IM: Dancer Morris: they have one on islands; I don't know if they also have it for the custom names
[2008/04/28 11:48] IM: Farnham Farrjones: LL Law
[2008/04/28 11:48] IM: Harper Beresford: I just want to know if they are getting RL money and support for all the time they have to put into SL
[2008/04/28 11:48] IM: Harper Beresford: is it paying off. bottom line.
[2008/04/28 11:48] IM: Harper Beresford: or is the branding enough?
[2008/04/28 11:48] IM: Zotarah Shepherd: Donations, education and exposure Tara
[2008/04/28 11:48] IM: CeAire Decosta: How much of it is being done by volunteers? No cost to the organizations themselves.
[2008/04/28 11:48] IM: Exosius Woolley: ever greated SL user base
[2008/04/28 11:48] IM: Ronnie Rhode: One of our members is currently studying that, Harper, in terms of our nonprofit commons residents, obviously ACS can say yes
[2008/04/28 11:48] IM: Dirk Talamasca: Pink avies rake in the cash.
[2008/04/28 11:49] IM: Dancer Morris: hard question. If they need lots of labor, but tap into willing resident volunteers and don't take up much staff time, it could work
[2008/04/28 11:49] Chimera Cosmos: open mike Veri?
[2008/04/28 11:49] IM: Harper Beresford: the volunteer time along is astounding
[2008/04/28 11:49] Veri Oddfellow: Sorry, Chimera
[2008/04/28 11:49] IM: Rose Springvale: educational and non profits do get a 50% price break on sims and tier, but i think that is only for full sims
[2008/04/28 11:49] Veri Oddfellow: Better?
[2008/04/28 11:49] Chimera Cosmos: np yes indeed
[2008/04/28 11:49] IM: Harper Beresford: alone
[2008/04/28 11:49] IM: Dancer Morris: also, some people visit the fundraising campaigns here but then send in money in RL -- hard to quantify that
[2008/04/28 11:50] IM: Harper Beresford: Rose, it seems that Alliez is offering sims for nonprofits as part of their company's charitable giving, as has Rezzable, if I recall
[2008/04/28 11:50] IM: Dancer Morris: you can't get the US tax deduction for donations if you donate L$
[2008/04/28 11:50] IM: Farqot Gustafson: In RL, non-profit volunteer hours are "counted" at $ 18.55 USD for grant applications
[2008/04/28 11:50] IM: CeAire Decosta: True Dancer. Unless there is a way to track that they donated specifically because of SL.
[2008/04/28 11:50] IM: Rose Springvale: really? that's good to know Harper
[2008/04/28 11:50] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: Alliez is amazing about donating sims for charity work
[2008/04/28 11:50] IM: Harper Beresford: Dancer, you think they are? Because I know I am sending in little piddling amounts of 250L left and right but I guess it adds up..
[2008/04/28 11:50] IM: Hydra Shaftoe: She's a real angel about that
[2008/04/28 11:50] IM: Dirk Talamasca calculates his snail time
[2008/04/28 11:50] IM: Rose Springvale: Alliez is an amazing person all around :)
[2008/04/28 11:51] IM: Alliez Mysterio: Wait a minute
[2008/04/28 11:51] IM: Alliez Mysterio: If I have one I do
[2008/04/28 11:51] IM: Rose Springvale: oops. she's here
[2008/04/28 11:51] IM: Alliez Mysterio: Im happy to
[2008/04/28 11:51] IM: Harper Beresford: yes
[2008/04/28 11:51] IM: Dancer Morris: Harper, unless you're itemizing deductions on your tax return, the charitable deduction isn't relevant
[2008/04/28 11:51] IM: Alliez Mysterio: just back
[2008/04/28 11:51] IM: Chimera Cosmos: do donors typically pick up the ongoing tier too?
[2008/04/28 11:51] IM: Ronnie Rhode: The two sims that Glitteractica represents here are donated and house 76 or so nonprofits who don't pay for the space.
[2008/04/28 11:51] IM: CeAire Decosta: If you plan to donate substantial amounts you should probably drag out the CC or write a check and get a receipt for the IRS.
[2008/04/28 11:51] IM: Alliez Mysterio: Oh I do
[2008/04/28 11:51] IM: Rose Springvale: we were only saying nice things Alliez! promise!
[2008/04/28 11:51] IM: Lovely Encore: If you would like to give a tax deductible donation, USD can be donated online check out www.slrfl.com
[2008/04/28 11:51] IM: Harper Beresford: well, I am not itemizig 250L. howeveer, my linden does not leave SL, so I am not paying taxes on it anyway, ostensibly
[2008/04/28 11:52] IM: CeAire Decosta: This is the equivalent of buying a box of Girl Scout cookies or buying a poppy.
[2008/04/28 11:52] IM: Harper Beresford: we were talking about how we would like to see you bald, Alliez ;)
[2008/04/28 11:52] IM: Dancer Morris: right, Harper, if you're donating L$ that were raised in-world and then donating it, you were never being taxed on that income
[2008/04/28 11:52] IM: Harper Beresford: right CeAire.. but then I buy a LOT of poppies on SL
[2008/04/28 11:52] IM: Dancer Morris: so taking deductions would be double-dipping
[2008/04/28 11:52] IM: Harper Beresford: well, I am, Dancer
[2008/04/28 11:52] IM: Alanagh Recreant thinks it depends entirely on WHY the nonprofit is inworld, and fundraising is not always the purpose for having a presence here - unlike the assumption of many.
[2008/04/28 11:52] IM: Chimera Cosmos: and shoes
[2008/04/28 11:52] IM: Harper Beresford: so I don't deduct
[2008/04/28 11:52] IM: CeAire Decosta: Spreading the wealth!
[2008/04/28 11:52] IM: Lovely Encore: Pay it forward
[2008/04/28 11:52] IM: Harper Beresford: I agree, Alanagh.. and I am asking if there is a metric for what they are getting otherwise
[2008/04/28 11:53] IM: Ronnie Rhode: Alanagh early results indicate awareness is just as important to SL presence as fundraising
[2008/04/28 11:53] IM: Thursday Xu: dot org?
[2008/04/28 11:53] IM: Harper Beresford: because we know RL companies are not banking on exposure in SL at this point to promote their brand.. not a lot of them, at least
[2008/04/28 11:53] IM: Alanagh Recreant: in our case, yes Harper
[2008/04/28 11:53] IM: Alanagh Recreant: I agree Ronnie
[2008/04/28 11:53] IM: Harper Beresford: or are the fundraisers actually ahead of the ball on this?
[2008/04/28 11:53] IM: CeAire Decosta: I think they are ahead.
[2008/04/28 11:54] IM: Harper Beresford: i have to say, ACS has raised my awareness but there is a LOT going on with this
[2008/04/28 11:54] IM: Dirk Talamasca: e-mail upyoursjonstewart@glitteractica.com

Boba Bloch: How come robots get to wear *their* birthday suits?
Cindy Ecksol: Hydra, we seem to be getting all the same text that's going to the web so I think we're ok....
Hydra Shaftoe: hey im a furry. I could get away with it if I wanted to :)
Bjorlyn Loon: Everyone, we are using a new CHATBRIDGE TECHNOLOGY to link up all of our event partner locations, AND THE WEB. LifeFactory Writer: secondlife:///app/group/a5b8e891-e990-9767-d73a-cbb0f0a87e46/about/
Sloan Skjellerup: WB Chase
Chase Marellan: Thanks
Tammy Nowotny: that iusse joey mentoned with Jack Sparrow vs. Johnny Depp is an old one... it happened 30 years ago with Star Wars & Harrison Ford
Fleep Tuque: You may need to disable and re-enable your voice chat in Edit - Preferences - Voice Chat. That often fixes things.
Veritas Variscan: applauds Joey
Cindy Ecksol: Giulia, try on the web: http://www.metanomics.net/WatchNow

Prospero Linden: /me can't get the video stream to play....
Bjerkel Eerie: lol
malburns: i have web stream feep - nothing else though
VirtualWorldsNews Writer: tammy: exactly. That was one of my first thoughts as well. Like most of the legal issues surrounding virtual worlds, it's not breaking entirely new ground, but, I think, putting new spin on older issues.
Aimee Breguet: check out preferences and enable streaming video
Veritas Variscan: mine is not paying, either
Veritas Variscan: playing ^
JenzZa Misfit: / we are not getting video here yet folks

SloanSkjellerup: Chimera, oh, TG you see that too? ... now, did you see the pink elephant, or should I ignore that one?
Michele Mrigesh: /me waves back at Bjorlyn :))
Bjorlyn Loon: Everyone, we are using a new CHATBRIDGE TECHNOLOGY to link up all of our event partner locations, AND THE WEB. Whatever you text in local chat will be seen in 4 other Metanomics venues, and be seen at our website. Thanks to Intersection Unlimited for this great innovation, that ties us all together across the growing metaverse of virtual worlds.
CeAire Decosta: Everyone is so quiet today......!!!
Alanagh Recreant: /me thinks the chatbridge is ingenious...!
IYan Writer: yay Fleep

Widget Whiteberry: /me is very* impressed with Virtual Ability
Aimee Breguet: ok
JenzZa Misfit: /*** post your questions right here in open chat ! ****
CeAire Decosta: Fight obesity - get out of these desk chairs!! (No offense!)
Prospero Linden: Heh... my virtual world dancing is way better than my real world dancingb.
Bevan: good job Hydra and Fleep!
Iris Jawetz: hahaha
Bucky Exonar: Ok, my avatar is chugging coffee....I'm chugging water...good to know my online and offline lives are similar
Latha Serevi: I'd like to learn about the Public Good proposals that didn't make the top five. Can I?
JenzZa Misfit: /me has a brother in law who dances like Fred Flintstone --- its not pretty ..trust me
Hydra Shaftoe: I dance great, but as I get older my break dancing is turning into broken dancing,
Farqot Gustafson: /me resembles that remark, JenzZa
Rik Riel: we'll speak something about the groups that didn't make the cut
JenzZa Misfit: / Farqot ! wave wave wave !

Prospero Linden: Hydra : I can crash the sim if you want....
Lynn Cullens: *waves hi to Prospero*
JenzZa Misfit: Prospero ! I will call you if I need that done ! WOOT! lol
CeAire Decosta: Save that for the 4th of July and fireworks!
JenzZa Misfit: ... behind every avatar .....is an avateer :)
Nany Kayo: I have a question for the guests
Neuron Shepherd: can you post the link please?
Nany Kayo: Hi. This is Nany Kayo with the Native Lands project. The Advocacy voting cycle turned out to be difficult for our project. We have a small team spread very thin right now, trying to advance our project in a very short time with two exhibits, Network Culture and SL5B. We dont have the resources to run a big campaign and produce high quality content that will attract the attention and support we need. The Advocacy voting process turns out to be biased against a smaller team on a larger, very build intensive project, like Native Lands.
Fleep Tuque: I'm really intrigued by the proposals that might serve as a way to preserve or archive historical events that either don't exist anymore in real lfe or are disappearing. Definitely interesting from an educational perspective.
Nany Kayo: like to ask about that
CeAire Decosta: Agreed Fleep!
CeAire Decosta: Hi Bjorlyn!
Bjorlyn Loon: Hi CeAire!
Neuron Shepherd: check out an installment in crosswolds art galle ry
Bjorlyn Loon: hey there Butch
Prospero Linden: /me wonders if those five qualities are really "virtual world gamer" qualities, or early adopter qualities?
Bjorlyn Loon: wow Lots of people here at Rockcliffe
CeAire Decosta: :-)
JenzZa Misfit: ..I am relaying that Nany
Nany Kayo: thank you!
Farqot Gustafson: @Prospero: Or both?
Alaya Kumaki: he s talking fromm the galaxies...sonds like
Fleep Tuque: The link to read more about the proposals AND vote is located at http://networkculture.usc.edu/projects/21-network-culture-projects/61-co...
CeAire Decosta: A few had tech problems so they left..
Paradox Olbers: BJ, 38-42 here in SL at Muse island
Fleep Tuque: The link just to go vote is at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=HxBaM4YaHIkixJAJmtNuNg_3d_3d
Neuron Shepherd: sorry fleep, there's an aazing installment of a family's history in crossworlds gallery
Cindy Ecksol: about 15 here at CN but there were more earlier...
Fleep Tuque: Thanks Neuron, don't think I've seen that. Will try to check it out. :)
Sloan Skjellerup: Hi Life
LifeFactory Writer: Hi Sloan :)
LifeFactory Writer: Nice little party here :)
Bevan: can we log this chatbridge as well as the Metanomics back chat and the local chats?
Bevan:
Bjorlyn Loon: there will be a complete transcript posted after the show Bevan
Bevan: great
Neuron Shepherd: the links would be good too
Sloan Skjellerup: yup, looks like we've all been looking forward to this

Tammy Nowotny: Thanks!
JenzZa Misfit: **Beyers check IM ****
Draxtor Despres: i would ask both guests the question how is SL positioned versus Flash based games, when it comes to social issue games

Lynn Cullens: wow, some old chat there!
Chase Marellan: Yes, yes, one moment, please. :)
Lynn Cullens: bear with us folks =)
Lynn Cullens: we just covered that Widget
Rik Riel: /me is impressed with Beyer's prononciation of my name
Fleep Tuque: Neuron, that link has all of the proposals I mentioned, I don't believe the projects have builds in world yet, that's what the contest is about, to get funding to create them.
Bevan: ty Colonial : -)
JedBlue Wind: Whoever mentioned Flash, the problem with Flash is that it doesnt support 3d applications
Lynn Cullens: tons of links about today's show.... bios of the guests, information about the research you are hearing about now, and also the USC Challenge for the Public Good at the Metanomics Website, archive for today's show: http://www.metanomics.net/Archive062308

Paradox Olbers: Draxor, another url http://www.seriousgames.org/index2.html

Draxtor Despres: thanks paradox
Buffy Beale: Thanks Rik
Paradox Olbers: yvw
IYan Writer: :)
Prospero Linden: "grief play"? :)
Hydra Shaftoe: The chatbridge is working at Colonia Nova just fine now
:: Prospero Linden: "grief play"? :)
Hydra Shaftoe: The chatbridge is working at Colonia Nova just fine now
Beyers Sellers: yes
NMC Metanomics Mic: Beyers Sellers: yes
Cindy Ecksol: yep, we should be back...
Tammy Nowotny: I witnessed a griefing attack at SL5B... haven't seen one in months
Neuron Shepherd: Apologies once more - is it me or do the links to the finalists not work?
Lynn Cullens: Neuron, let me check for you
Widget Whiteberry: The applicants /finalists were not told about the learning objectives of Community Challenge. Why not?
Chase Marellan: It's OK, we're back online here.
Chase Marellan: let me know if there are any other issues.
Rik Riel: /is hacker culture the same as griefer culture? I suspect not.
Cindy Ecksol: thanks, chase
Fleep Tuque: Neuro, if you go to http://networkculture.usc.edu/ and click on Projects, the Community Challenge is the first one listed.
Lynn Cullens: you are correct, Neuron... Ill fix that right now
Chase Marellan: My pleasure
Fleep Tuque: (Er sorry, don't know about other links that might point to that page.)
CeAire Decosta: I don't think so Rik in many cases.
Free Radar HUD: /me v1.1 by Crystal Gadgets
Neuron Shepherd: thos elinks work, thx to all for help
Prospero Linden: /me also gets a little confused because of the term "Hacker". There's "Hacker = Cracker", people who break into computers, etc, and "Hacker = Experimenter", the people who write Linux kernels or take apart their radios and like to play with how things work and modify them.
Prospero Linden: There is overlap, of course, but they're very different sort of things.
Fleep Tuque: Agreed, Prospero
JenzZa Misfit: exactly , Prospero
Rik Riel: /hacker and griefer culture is about transgression. Crossing lines that aren't supposed to be crossed.
Lynn Cullens: All fixed Neuron!!! and thanks for pointing out my error! =)
JenzZa Misfit: there are slacker hackers and Helpful Hackers !!
JenzZa Misfit: maybe
Prospero Linden: Re: sense of anxiety about things that we don't understand.... all very true! That's why government often gets scary when it comes to new technology, because most people *don't* understand it, and react normally with fear.
JedBlue Wind: Hacker was taken over by the media in 1984 Wargames and it changes its connotations from the original tech geek meaning to something different
Boba Bloch: The pencil (technology) doesn't cause me any anxiety
Hawc Decosta: .-'`'-. APPLAUSE APPLAUSE .-'`'-.
Hawc Decosta: Bravo!
JedBlue Wind: hmm how do i chat in green?
Farqot Gustafson: @Rik: Things I would have been skinned alive for as a teenager.
Rik Riel: thanks everyone for having us!
JimmyJet Fossett: Thanks Rik and Douglas
Tammy Nowotny: /me clapcaps
Chase Marellan: JedBlue: You're already in green -- at all the other locations. :)
JenzZa Misfit: I know ! on the Rush Limbaugh show !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lynn Cullens: Thanks to all of you at the Event Partners for helping us out as we test these innovations!
JenzZa Misfit: oops
Buffy Beale: /claps madly, thanks!
Tammy Nowotny: (in hiding)
Hydra Shaftoe: Bjorlyn's using the big words!
LifeFactory Writer: Some of the "conservatives" are among the griefing community, I found...But then, so are some of the liberals *addresses this in my film*
Rik Riel: /isb;'t this taking an american frame on this transnational space?
Fleep Tuque: I personally prefer the term progressive rather than liberal. :)
Draxtor Despres: Conservative racist LePen from good ol' France was in SL once :)
Paradox Olbers: Boba, as long as u dont have to *mae* a pencil! :)
Paradox Olbers: to make^
JenzZa Misfit: ***GREAT SHOW EVERYONE !*!*************
Tammy Nowotny: I think the liberal Democrats are the true conservatives (like me)
LifeFactory Writer: agree re: "progressive" instead of "liberal"
Cindy Ecksol: by definition conservatives take a while to catch on to new social trends!
JenzZa Misfit: FLeep ! myriad minded !
Neuron Shepherd: yeah liberal is an American term really
Bevan: define Libertarian in the proper manner please
Lynn Cullens: But dont go yet! More to come!
Hydra Shaftoe: I really should steer clear of the liberals vs conservatives issue in virtual worlds. I didn't get that degree in political science for nothing. You'd NEVER shut me up.
Boba Bloch: In Canada, Liberal is a political party
Widget Whiteberry: COnservatives are here
JimmyJet Fossett: Bob Barr?
arabella Ella: are conservaties early adopters
Fleep Tuque: Muahah Hydra, PoliSci degree here, too. :)
Aki Shichiroji: lol
Lynn Cullens: And..... Beyers has some ideas about this posted on the front page at www.metanomics.net
JenzZa Misfit: OR ERIC CLAPTON ! WOOOOOT !!!!
