MCF: 2011.Feb.24 | Gamestorming & Icebreakers

During my recent period of ennui and illness, I repeatedly picked up Gamestorming, by Sunni Brown, David Gray and James Macanufo and paged through it. My hope was that the energy clearly held within this anthology of games and exercises would seep into my bones and seed a rapid recovery. Alas, it never worked any better than reading a cookbook would magically result in a bowl of chicken soup wafting it’s way to my soul. But I’m not going to hold it against Gamestorming. It’s currently in the top 100 bestselling business books at Amazon.

Games are a constant topic for virtual residents. We must tirelessly explain how Second Life is not a game, but we also recognize how virtual environments lend themselves to groups engaging in collaborative efforts, and games are a natural. Gamestorming builds their definition of a game with a key point: “It’s not a game if people are forced to play.” Games require agreeing to play with in a structure of conditions or rules. And as I have learned over years of crafting learning moments, it also needs to be fun.

I grabbed a wonderful page from the sketchbook of Eva-Lotta Lamm, drawn as she listened to David Gray talk about the process of using games.

Please bring your thoughts and ideas to a Metanomics Community Forum today at 12pm SLT at the Metanomics Studio in Second Life. We’ll use a few suggested icebreakers from the book and explore how they can be re-cast as Second Life specific techniques.

You can join us in Second life for this event or watch it on our web site:www.Metanomics.net where it will be streamed live from the Studio.
